Northeast encompasses four of the\u00a0<a title=\"Regions of Italy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Regions_of_Italy\">country&#8217;s 20 regions<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"Emilia-Romagna\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Emilia-Romagna\">Emilia-Romagna<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Friuli-Venezia Giulia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Friuli-Venezia_Giulia\">Friuli-Venezia Giulia<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Trentino-Alto Adige\/S\u00fcdtirol\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trentino-Alto_Adige\/S%C3%BCdtirol\">Trentino-Alto Adige\/S\u00fcdtirol<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Veneto\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Veneto\">Veneto<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Culturally and historically,\u00a0<a title=\"Emilia-Romagna\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Emilia-Romagna\">Emilia-Romagna<\/a>\u00a0is part of\u00a0<a title=\"Northwest Italy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Northwest_Italy\">Northwest Italy<\/a>, but is included in Northeast Italy for statistical reasons.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Culture\" class=\"mw-headline\">Culture<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a title=\"Italian language\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Italian_language\">Italian<\/a>\u00a0is the main language. Other languages include\u00a0<a title=\"Venetian language\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Venetian_language\">Venetian<\/a>, widely spoken in Veneto and along the coast to\u00a0<a title=\"Trieste\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trieste\">Trieste<\/a>\u00a0and Istria, as well as in the towns of\u00a0<a title=\"Pordenone\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pordenone\">Pordenone<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Gorizia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gorizia\">Gorizia<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<a title=\"Friuli\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Friuli\">Friuli<\/a>, and in most of\u00a0<a title=\"Trentino\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trentino\">Trentino<\/a>, but only recognised by the\u00a0<a title=\"Veneto\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Veneto\">Veneto<\/a>\u00a0region;\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Friulian\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Friulian\">Friulian<\/a>, spoken in most of\u00a0<a title=\"Friuli\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Friuli\">Friuli<\/a>\u00a0and nationally recognized, and\u00a0<a title=\"Ladin language\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ladin_language\">Ladin<\/a>, spoken by a few thousand people in the\u00a0<a title=\"Dolomites\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dolomites\">Dolomites<\/a>. Other languages are\u00a0<a title=\"German language\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/German_language\">German<\/a>, the primary language of\u00a0<a title=\"South Tyrol\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/South_Tyrol\">South Tyrol<\/a>, where Italian is spoken by about two thirds of the inhabitants, and\u00a0<a title=\"Slovene language\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Slovene_language\">Slovene<\/a>, recognized by Italy and spoken on the border of Italy and Istria, where the main language today is\u00a0<a title=\"Croatia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Croatia\">Croatian<\/a>\u00a0but Italian is recognized as a minority language.<\/p>\n<p>The terms\u00a0<i><b><a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Tre Venezie\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tre_Venezie\">Tre Venezie<\/a><\/b><\/i>\u00a0or\u00a0<i><b><a title=\"Triveneto\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Triveneto\">Triveneto<\/a><\/b>\u00a0<\/i>(literally &#8220;Triple Veneto&#8221;), refer to the three regions of Veneto (before 1947 Venezia Euganea, united to Friuli)\u00a0<a title=\"Trentino-Alto Adige\/S\u00fcdtirol\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trentino-Alto_Adige\/S%C3%BCdtirol\">Trentino-Alto Adige\/S\u00fcdtirol<\/a>\u00a0(once Venezia Tridentina) and Friuli-Venezia Giulia.<\/p>\n<p><i><b><a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Venetia (region)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Venetia_(region)\">Venetia<\/a><\/b><\/i>, a region which indicated the old land provinces of\u00a0<a title=\"Republic of Venice\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Republic_of_Venice\">the Venetian Republic<\/a>\u00a0from river\u00a0<a title=\"Adda (river)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Adda_(river)\">Adda<\/a>\u00a0to river\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Isonzo\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Isonzo\">Isonzo<\/a>, and is sometimes still used today to indicate this territory together with\u00a0<a title=\"Trentino\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trentino\">Trentino<\/a>\u00a0and Trieste.<\/p>\n<p><i><b><a class=\"new\" title=\"Venetia et Histria (page does not exist)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Venetia_et_Histria&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">Venetia et Histria<\/a><\/b><\/i>, an old region of\u00a0<a title=\"Italy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Italy\">Italy<\/a>\u00a0at the time of\u00a0<a title=\"Roman Empire\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roman_Empire\">Roman Empire<\/a>, refers to Veneto,\u00a0<a title=\"Trentino\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trentino\">Trentino<\/a>, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, East\u00a0<a title=\"Lombardy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lombardy\">Lombardy<\/a>\u00a0and Istria; it was named after the people of\u00a0<a title=\"Adriatic Veneti\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Adriatic_Veneti\">Veneti<\/a>, who inhabited that region, and who are still largely the main ethnic group of the Italian area (other main ethnic groups include\u00a0<a class=\"new\" title=\"Friulani (page does not exist)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Friulani&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">Friulani<\/a>\u00a0in the east, mostly in\u00a0<a title=\"Province of Udine\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Province_of_Udine\">Udine province<\/a>;\u00a0<a title=\"Ladin people\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ladin_people\">Ladins<\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0<a title=\"Dolomites\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dolomites\">Dolomites<\/a>\u00a0are between Veneto and Trentino-Alto Adige\/S\u00fcdtirol;\u00a0<a title=\"Germans\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Germans\">Germans<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<a title=\"South Tyrol\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/South_Tyrol\">South Tyrol<\/a>; and\u00a0<a title=\"Slovenes\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Slovenes\">Slovene<\/a>\u00a0minorities on the border with\u00a0<a title=\"Slovenia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Slovenia\">Slovenia<\/a>\u00a0and in the city of Trieste); while after 1947 Venetian\/<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Italian people\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Italian_people\">Italian people<\/a>\u00a0are just a minority in Slovenian and\u00a0<a title=\"Croatia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Croatia\">Croatian<\/a>\u00a0Istria.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Northeast Italy\u00a0(Italian:\u00a0Italia nord-orientale\u00a0or just\u00a0Nord-est) is one of the five official statistical regions of\u00a0Italy\u00a0used by the\u00a0National Institute of Statistics\u00a0(ISTAT), a\u00a0first level NUTS region\u00a0and a\u00a0European Parliament constituency.
