Insular Italy encompasses two of the\u00a0<a title=\"Regions of Italy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Regions_of_Italy\">country&#8217;s 20 regions<\/a>:\u00a0<a title=\"Sardinia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sardinia\">Sardinia<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Sicily\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sicily\">Sicily<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Geography\" class=\"mw-headline\">Geography<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Insular Italy occupies one-sixth of the national territory in surface area. Territorially, both Sicily and Sardinia include several minor islands and\u00a0<a title=\"Archipelago\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Archipelago\">archipelagoes<\/a>\u00a0administratively dependent on the mother islands.<\/p>\n<p>Sicily is the largest island in the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Mediterranean\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mediterranean\">Mediterranean<\/a>\u00a0(25,708\u00a0km<sup>2<\/sup>) and one of the largest of\u00a0<a title=\"Europe\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Europe\">Europe<\/a>, while Sardinia is only slightly less extensive (24,090\u00a0km<sup>2<\/sup>). The lowlands are generally limited in the geographic region and generally appear as narrow coastal belts. The only exceptions are the\u00a0<a title=\"Campidano\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Campidano\">Campidano<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Nurra\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nurra\">Nurra<\/a>\u00a0in Sardinia and the\u00a0<a title=\"Plain of Catania\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Plain_of_Catania\">Plain of Catania<\/a>\u00a0in Sicily that extend 1200\u00a0km<sup>2<\/sup>\u00a0and 430\u00a0km<sup>2<\/sup>respectively. The rest of the area is prevalently hilly, with hills occupying 70% of the territory. Sicily is home to\u00a0<a title=\"Mount Etna\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mount_Etna\">Mount Etna<\/a>, Italy&#8217;s highest non-<a title=\"Alps\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alps\">Alpine<\/a>\u00a0peak and Europe&#8217;s largest active volcano. Sardinia is home to the\u00a0<a title=\"Gennargentu\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gennargentu\">Gennargentu<\/a>\u00a0mountain range.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Demographics\" class=\"mw-headline\">Demographics<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The population of Insular Italy totals combined over 6.7 million residents. Insular Italy has a population density of less than half the national average mainly because of the scarce population of\u00a0<a title=\"Sardinia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sardinia\">Sardinia<\/a>, one of the least densely populated regions of Italy and Europe.\u00a0<a title=\"Sicily\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sicily\">Sicily<\/a>, on the other hand, has in fact a population density five times higher than Sardinia.<\/p>\n<p>Their combined populations total just one-tenth of the national population making Insular Italy the least populated macro-region of the country.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Socio-economic_situation\" class=\"mw-headline\">Socio-economic situation<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Unemployment rate\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Unemployment_rate\">unemployment rate<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0<a title=\"Sicily\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sicily\">Sicily<\/a>\u00a0is the highest in the country at 11.9%, while in\u00a0<a title=\"Sardinia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sardinia\">Sardinia<\/a>\u00a0between 2006-07 it dropped for the first time below 10%, reaching 8.6%, the lowest of all the\u00a0<a title=\"Southern Italy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Southern_Italy\">Mezzogiorno<\/a>\u00a0regions, excluding\u00a0<a title=\"Molise\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Molise\">Molise<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Abruzzo\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abruzzo\">Abruzzo<\/a>. The low level of entrepreneurship in Sicily is tied to the local\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Sicilian mafia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sicilian_mafia\">organized criminal activity<\/a>, while in Sardinia it results from the rather expensive operating expenses (electricity, transportation, etc.) being 20-50% higher than other regions due to its peripheral location from the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Italian peninsula\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Italian_peninsula\">Italian mainland<\/a>\u00a0and the lack of a proper territorial continuity (<i>continuit\u00e0 territoriale<\/i>): such condition has been reduced in Sardinia with the development of\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Information technologies\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Information_technologies\">information technologies<\/a>, like\u00a0<a title=\"Tiscali\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tiscali\">Tiscali<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Low-cost carrier\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Low-cost_carrier\">low-cost carrier<\/a>, like\u00a0<a title=\"Ryanair\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ryanair\">Ryanair<\/a>, and some laws regarding fares and routes between the islands and mainland Italy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Insular Italy\u00a0(Italian:\u00a0Italia insulare\u00a0or just\u00a0Isole) is one of the five official statistical regions of\u00a0Italy\u00a0used by the\u00a0National Institute of Statistics\u00a0(ISTAT), a\u00a0first level NUTS region\u00a0and a\u00a0European Parliament constituency.
